ISESA Announces TUS Athlone as Host for Conference 2026

The Irish Sport and Exercise Sciences Association (ISESA) has announced TUS Athlone as the venue for next year’s annual conference.
It is only the second ever annual conference and this morning’s announcement follows a very successful first ever conference, held in May of this year, in SETU Waterford.
Speaking this morning, ISESA Chair, Prof Tom Comyns, welcomed the news and looked forward to the event next year.
“The ISESA is delighted to announce that our second annual conference will take place in Athlone in May 2026.
“Our first conference was a huge undertaking and as with any first, you want it to do well. It was brilliant to then see over 200 delegates down in Waterford and to see such an engaged and energised audience over the two days. That has given us a brilliant foundation and we can’t wait to build towards TUS Athlone.
“We would like to thank Dr Aoife Lane and all the staff in the Department of Sport and Health Sciences in TUS Athlone for supporting the ISESA and hosting us next May.
“We look forward to an exciting event in Athlone and the bringing together of sport and exercise science practitioners, students, graduates, professionals, researchers and academics.”
Also speaking this morning, Dr Aoife Lane, Head of Department of Sport and Health Sciences at TUS Athlone, said, “The Department of Sport and Health Sciences in TUS Athlone are delighted to host the ISESA Conference in 2026.
“We look forward to welcoming over 200 delegates to our new home in the Mary Ward Centre for Science, where we have bespoke lab facilities for sport and exercise science, biomechanics and athletic therapy.
“There is lots more to experience on and around campus, from the International Arena to the local greenway, which takes you directly to Sean’s Bar!
“Wishing everyone the best for the coming academic year and we will see you all in Athlone in May!”
The ISESA was established in 2023 and is the representative body for the sport and exercise sciences community in Ireland. It is an all-island, not-for-profit organisation and is also an associate member of the International Confederation of Sport and Exercise Sciences Practice.
There were over 200 delegates in attendance at its first-ever annual conference in Waterford last year and the second edition promises to be just as engaging with practitioners, athletes, researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students, as well as policy makers and industry experts in attendance over the two days.
The second ISESA annual conference will be held on 21 and 22 May 2026 and Prof Comyns is encouraging those interested to put the dates in their diaries, with full details to be revealed early in the new year.
“We ask everyone interested to save the dates. We are already working on our panel of speakers and anyone who was in attendance last year, will attest to the quality and the variety of the presentations and discussions.
“Delegates will again have the opportunity to share, learn, reflect, discuss, network and collaborate with colleagues from across Ireland and internationally.
“This is an important event for the ISESA as the representative professional national body for the sport and exercise sciences community in Ireland and we look forward to seeing everyone in TUS Athlone in 2026.”
Further information on the conference will be announced in early 2026 across ISESA on social media and on www.isesa.ie.
