Sport Physiology

Declan leads the sports physiology and performance science teams at the Sport Northern Ireland Sports Institute. He is an Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist through the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. He has extensive experience of providing physiological support and performance solutions to athletes and coaches over six Olympic and Paralympic cycles.  Declan was appointed lead Physiologist for Team Ireland for the Tokyo Olympic Games and was responsible for coordinating the travel and acclimation preparation for athletes and support staff.

Declan initially studied Sport, Exercise and Leisure at Ulster University and was awarded a Diploma in Industrial Studies following completion of a professional training internship at the Western Australian Institute of Sport in Perth. He then obtained a Masters in Sports Physiology from Liverpool John Moores University and subsequently completed his PhD in Dublin City University. His research has explored the physical, tactical, and technical performance aspects of Gaelic football.
